Tecia Delores: Wherever She Goes There's Healing
Mental Health Advocate. Artist. Community Builder. These are the roles Tecia Delores lives out and the legacy she’s giving to her children.
In addition to the descriptors above I’ve also known Tecia to be a Theatre Education Specialist, Director, Mother, Teaching Artist, Painter, Actor, Yogi, and friend. Today, I’d like to shine light on her dopeness and how it manifests itself throughout her life, art, and societal contributions.
A Cleveland, OH native, Tecia is the founder of Forever Asè:
“Forever Asè is a lifestyle about caring for yourself in order to care for others. It is created with the Yoruba belief of Asè. Asè is believed to be a power we have within our minds and voices to declare things and create them. It means “let it be”. Forever Asè represents being powerful forever, in every moment, every situation, you have a God given power flowing through you. I often say reclaim your mind, reclaim your power. Reclaim and capture the power within your thoughts and beliefs, the power to redirect them and the power to manifest. Actions start with a thought. Once we think it then we can begin to believe in it and act upon it.” - Tecia Delores
In her own words Tecia creates products for those needing to stimulate their mental wellness. For those who feel the need to be strong, who need help at times remembering the strength in falling apart.
“I create for those who muffle their truths, hiding behind unhealthy coping mechanisms. I created my products for it to slow someone down so they can enjoy caressing their own skin, rubbing their body, smelling the flowers and having their mental health stimulated in everyday tasks.”
In the middle of July, Forever Asè launched the I CAN Do Yoga series. It was birthed from the desire to endow those re-claiming their mental health with more tools to help sustain them along their journey.
“The I CAN Do Yoga series is for those needing a safe space to stumble, to be unsure, to desire to do things they may not know is possible with their body and mind. I create to make dreams of peace come true, providing a series of tools that can lead to someone discovering their path of healing. The more tools the more ways to approach the situation.”
This year Tecia began her journey with yoga and throughout her business page (@_forever_ase), as well her personal page (@tecia_delores), she shares this venture with us. Her growth, triumphs, check-ins, and honest self-assessments de-bunk the notion and societal pressure that comes with having to get it right “all the time”. She is a mental health warrior and as she creates products, art, community spaces, and home she encourages her followers to #reclaimyourmind #reclaimyourpower #benddontbreak and to invest in their own #holistichealing and #healingtrauma.
I recently interviewed Tecia and would love to share our discussion below.
Samantha V. Richards: How does motherhood affect your art?
Tecia Delores: Motherhood affects everything I do. Being a mother makes me sensitive to the world, it is what propelled me into my artistry and Forever Asè.
SVR: Do you have a common goal that threads all of your outlets together? Whether it be theatre, yoga, Forever Ase, visual arts (painting).
TD: The common goal in all my ventures is to share that we are not alone. You are not alone in the difficulties of starting something new, of needing support, and my art reflects my mind and thoughts.
SVR: Keeping in mind all the journeys you’re embarking on, how do you check in with yourself and stay grounded?
TD: I believe I stay grounded by being honest with myself. I have to be honest when I’m pushing myself too much and when I need to set boundaries.
SVR: Any advice for upcoming artists and entrepreneurs?
TD: My greatest advice is to say your fears out loud to those you trust. Sometimes we have ideas and fears and in our mind they seem huge. Once we say them out loud and shed light, we see how small they are. We are able to see how we can conquer that fear. Say all the solutions tangible and intangible. For every fear, three solutions. Being an artist and entrepreneur is not easy and it weighs on you mentally. Staying true to what YOUR vision is is the key. Things evolve and trust it. I did not expect Forever Asè to exist but it was born out of a fear of harming myself, to me thinking of solutions, and then wanting to create support for others. I fear letting people down when I have my days of anxiety, I tell myself the lie I am supposed to be the poster child of mental wellness and tough days are hard. But I have to remember I started this to not be ashamed, but to say it’s okay.
It’s important that as we better ourselves that we find displays of truth. People that understand that our lives aren’t solely for ourselves nor those we know intimately, but that our lives, our stories can help someone else envision victory. This world would be incomplete without YOU and your unique touch.
