#7toSelfCare: Thoughts on Putting Myself First
I focused on self-care for 7 straight days and it was amazing.
Maybe that seems obvious, but for me, self-care has always been a little tainted with guilt, especially as a mom. It’s something that I always push down to the bottom of the priority list to make sure everyone else is taken care of and happy. Something that I always say I should work on... some day in the future. I know I shouldn't leave myself for last. I do. But honestly, life always gets in the way. Or, I let it get in the way. And I am truly tired of it.
But let me back up for a moment. #7toselfcare is a 7 day self-care challenge hosted by our lovely leader, Cydney, here at Dream On Youth. I joined because I was ready and committed to focus on myself. I knew I needed some kind of structure and support and this challenge came through in spades. Every morning, we received an email with the day's challenge and some food for thought and lots of encouragement. There were also IG live videos where we could interact with Cydney and ask questions.
Now, I know what some of you are thinking: Self-care? What, did you talk about lighting candles and taking bubble baths? If you've been around these parts for any length of time, you know DOY goes deeper than that. Surface-level fluff isn't going to cut it. Self-care is so much more.
I won't spoil the daily challenges/prompts for you, but I will say that they truly made me stop and think. There were things that I hadn't thought about before and had to process and it all felt really uplifting and enlightening, with a dose of much-needed tough love. I join a lot of challenges and rarely finish any of them. But I completed every single prompt from #7toselfcare. I showed up for myself! During the challenge, I felt lighter, happier, more seen. I looked at myself more. I stood a little taller. I looked forward to what each day would bring. It was such a great feeling.
And behind it all, Cydney was always there with the reminder that it's all about progress, not perfection. Of course we can't focus on self-care 24 hours a day. We all have lives and responsibilities. Any step to improve your self-care is a step in the right direction. Remember that you are important and you deserve it.
