Fostering Healthy Friendships
Friendships are very important in order to maintain a healthy social life. Friendships can help you be happier and live a longer life. However, making friendships can be harder nowadays. The rise of social media has increased our network but decreased the number of close friends. Here are a few tips on fostering healthy friendships and, most importantly, keeping them:
MAKE SURE TO SEE YOUR FRIENDS IN PERSON
It's way better to see your friends in person than just continuing to chat online. I know this from personal experience.
My friend, Neva, and I are in opposite parts of the country during the school year. But we still make time to see each other whenever we are on break. It's great to catch up with each other and spend some time together.
It doesn't even have to be anything expensive. Hang out at home or go get Starbucks. Sometimes the best activities are the simplest ones.
MAKE SURE TO TEXT OR CALL THEM OFTEN
This is so important! Friendships can die if you don't bother to take the time to text them back, so make sure to do this! It takes 30 seconds to send a text, so no excuses.
If you're more into calling people, call your friends at the minimum twice a month. If you don't bother to contact them, they will just get distant and stop contacting you and hanging out with you.
LEAN ON THEM FOR SUPPORT
One aspect of deepening healthy friendships is leaning on them for support in times of need. If you're struggling with anything, don't feel bad about asking them for help.
Don't be prideful and be independent. It's good to ask for help sometimes, especially when you're in trouble (e.g. death in the family, needing a temporary place to stay, etc.).
One example of this could be asking for them to make meals for you if someone close to you has died. This is a great way of asking for help, and they can help you in return.
REMEMBER THEIR BIRTHDAYS
This is a small gesture, but this can go very far in fostering great friendships. Remembering your friend's birthdays can make them feel special and wanted.
Don't just rely on Facebook to wish them a happy birthday. Put a reminder on your phone using the reminder app so you'll be able to remember to text them or call them every year.
Fostering friendships is important to living a happy and healthy life. Take the time this summer to reach out to your friends and even make new friendships!
