A How-To: Start a Blog
So, you want to delve into the world of blogging, but you have absolutely no clue as to where to start? I’m no expert, I blog based off of things in my life that inspire me and get the overworked wires in my head racing. I blog about my life, the things I think people need to understand about themselves and the world around them, and sometimes I do a few reviews of my favorite things: books, music, movies, etc. There is no exact formula for having the “perfect” theme or writing style for your blog, it’s a day by day, learn as you go type of process. Here are a few tips I have to help you get started:
Choose a platform: Whether it be Weebly, Blogger or Wordpress there are a variety of blogging sites to utilize. For me, this is my favorite part. You get to choose the site, the theme, create a name a color scheme etc. It’s your own space and by deciding the look of it yourself, you’re given the chance to let your personality shine through the design.
Name Your Blog: This will be how you identify yourself. It can be anywhere from your name to words that describe who you are, or something you feel encompasses your blog as a whole. It’s also fun to play around with different languages to make your name unique and help your blog stand out.
Create an About Me Page: This is the step I typically find the most challenging to get through. What you have to remember is this: what do you want your audience to know? You’re not writing an autobiography, this is just a glimpse into your world, a low key introduction. So share fragments of who you are, the things you like and then let your posts do the rest of the talking.
Add Social Links and Pictures: What better way to stay connected than to share through social media? The best way to get your blog noticed is to share your posts via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. They say never judge a book (or post!) by it’s cover, but sometimes an eye catching image will intrigue someone to click the link. There’s no harm in providing images, videos and links to add to the aesthetic of your post/blog!
Write Your First Post: Once you've set up your blog and you're happy with how it looks, it's time to write! Personally, I write about things pressing on my heart, things I know people need to hear, things I'm passionate about, and I often share things I enjoy. There are a lot of posts out there telling you how to be a certain type of blogger and how to keep your readers interested and the best way to make money blogging, etc. If you ask me, blogging, first and foremost, should be done for you. If you want to write about food, write about food. If you want to write reviews, write reviews. It doesn't have to be the same type of post every time. Yes, having a readership and an audience to write to is significant, but you have to enjoy it. Don't force words from your fingers that aren't there. Speak from your heart. Open up when you're ready. That is when you are truly authentic. That is when you connect with people the most.
